The Ordnance, 29 Ordnance Hill, St John’s Wood

The Ordnance, 29 Ordnance Hill, St John’s Wood, NW8 6PS
Surprisingly, given that it is just a short walk to the millionaire’s mansions of Avenue Road this is a Sam Smiths pub. Who would have though thought it is possible to get cheap beer in St John’s Wood? The prices may be cheap but shabby this ain’t. The pub occupies a smart period building at the corner of a genteel tree-lined road. On the inside the bar area is decorated by a host of illuminated twigs (that were probably harvested from the trees outside) to give it a more classy and fashionable vibe. The beer, reassuringly, is all standard Sam Smiths. The staff were friendly and efficient. The pub extends out to the back and leads to a pleasant beer garden which is ideal for smokers or for lounging in the summer months. Being the middle of winter we opted instead for a fireside seat. The punters were a fairly mixed bunch and included young people and families. There were none of the super rich neighbours. Presumably they are all too posh to spend an evening in the local pub. We felt the pub had an upmarket feel but without the prices to match.
