Westferry pubs
A no-mans-land between the phallic Canary Wharf and down-at-heel Commercial Road.
The Oporto, 43 West India Dock Road, E14 8EZ
At long last, finally a decent and (permanent) new landlord at the Oporto. Pete West was on top form and it was great to see a lot of the old faces from East London, especially the lads from Bethnal Green and Bow. I was there for the whole weekend. What a great atmosphere, the music was fantastic, the drinks were flowing freely and it looks like there are more great things to come. So do yourselves a favour and get yourself down to The Oporto to have a guaranteed good night out.

If you dare to walk in a north-westerly direction from the gleaming towers of Canary Wharf you will eventually cross the invisible line that marks the beginning of the East End. In bygone days the pub overlooked dock cranes and enormous ships unloading goods from all over the world. The pub's foreign sounding name alludes to this historical point. This is a popular establishment and on our visit it contained a colourful blend of characters which gave the place an air of dodgyness. It seems to be something of a focal point for the local community and among the regular events hosted here are live music, karaoke, quiz nights and big screen sports.
