Poplar pubs
Working class district that grew up around the docks. It is now separated from Docklands by Aspen Way and retains its own character.

What better way to skive off shopping than visit the pub? What a fine pub it is too. I thought the traditional East End boozer had disappeared forever. Most seem to have become havens for angry white men with criminal tendencies or bulldozed to make way for needless luxury flats. This one appears to have avoided both pitfalls. The chirpy landlord sitting at the bar greeted me with an "awight mate" and I was immediately served by the young barmaid. The Bengali man quietly drinking across the other side of the room evaporated the last reserve of suspicion I'd had upon walking in and I relaxed. As I sit down and read, the regulars slowly arrive and the familiar patter of friendly discourse fills the air. Soon after, generous plates of "East End tapas" are laid out for the punters. This is a rare treat. I've been to pubs in Essex which keep up this fine East End tradition, but this is the first time I've actually seen it in its spiritual home. There is a real sense of community here which marks this place out as a top quality local.
