New Cross pubs

Once a wasteland, and now a trendy wasteland, punctuated by two rail lines and "free-thinking" Goldsmiths College.

The Amersham Arms, 388 New Cross Rd, SE14 6TY
So this is it, the pub that started all the rumours that New Cross was, in fact, the new Hoxton. What that means in practice is a fairly ordinary drinking hole colonised by the young ‘free thinkers’ of Goldsmiths College, who spend the evening staring admiringly at each other’s clothes. I felt like I was trapped in a bad episode of The Mighty Boosh.

Minimalist wooden outfit still clearly reeling from a mid-90s refit. Dreadful beer selection is made up for by a sparklingly diverse crowd. Does live music.

Scruffy, bare-bones old man’s boozer. Pool table. Sky Sports.

Very, um, Boho. As it happens, that’s not such a bad thing, especially in New Cross, where the usual pub sensation is that of cold fear, wondering which of the loonies or puffed-up bags of testosterone is going to stick some of the silverware in your back. A cheerful, interracial, very mixed bag of people loll about in a post-traditional setting (the usual wooden pub stuff plus random bits of Georgian furniture) whose atmosphere owes a lot to the nearby Goldsmiths College. Some decent beers on tap plus pretty okay food. No TV. Nice taxidermy lining the walls.

This establishment is a lot more appealing than much of the competition along this stretch of New Cross Road (i.e you don't risk death by going in). It's basically a large student pub with a bar occupying the centre. The plastic surface of the bar meanders in a serpentine fashion in a vaguely ovoid shape. This could be a cleverly engineered way of getting more punters to stand there, however it's more likely an attempt to generate some sort of wacky student atmosphere out of what is essentially an old Victorian pub. Kronenbourg White and Guinness are the most interesting beer offerings at the bar, but they do serve a range of Thai food here that could rival a restaurant. A part of the left hand wall is covered by old Victorian style glazed pub tiles. In complete contrast the right hand wall appears to have been decorated by local primary school children and is covered by a series of stick figures. There is also a TV situated at high level at the back for those with telescopic eyes.
