Kilburn pubs

The Black Lion, 274 Kilburn High Road, NW6 2BY
This once must have been a very grand Victorian pub, in the High Gothic pub style of tall arched windows, high ceilings with ornately styled motifs carved into them, lots of separate partitions and a central bar. Sadly, during the late '90's craze for wooden floors, clear glass windows and groovy leather sofas for web designers to lounge in, many of the original details have been destroyed. This pub is now a peculiar half-and-half: the carpets, partitions and mottled glass windows have been ripped out, and a lot of the traditional iron-wrought furniture replaced with IKEA rejects, whilst the original ceiling and many of the wall trappings remain. This schizoid tendency stretches to the beer (from the run-of-the-mill to fancy foreign stuff), the food (Walkers crisps or the snazzy side restaurant?) and the clientele (young entrepreneurs wearing the latest 'yak's arse' style haircut through to bickering old soaks and a lively group of middle-aged locals). Whilst not as bad as most of the cool lounge bars in the area (yup, that's right, in Kilburn) I'm not quite sure what, if anything, to make of this place. It's a neither-nor, and surely there can't be any way of only selling half your soul to the devil?

Fog. Immediately upon entering my eyes water, my throat constricts and my lungs try to hurl themselves out of my chest. It's, er, smoky. I wade to the bar and choke out an order for some Guinness. Propping up the bar are the Regulars: silent, still, desiccated men, fags hanging from gobs. Social interaction seems to consist of the stentorian rattle of expletives. Away from the bar, lost in the smoky pea-souper, a cheerful crowd huddle round tables, laughing gaily in an asbestos-lunged sort of manner. The staff were lovely, the prices cheap and the beer good, and away from the cadaverous bar the atmosphere was quite jolly. In general I rather enjoyed myself, despite feeling my lifespan contract by several years. But definitely a pub for the locals.
