A towering Victorian monster of a pub that is rightly famous for its sometimes iffy and sometimes exhilarating back-room gigs. Aside from the black-painted, rather anonymous nature of the live music area, the rest of the pub remains strictly traditional in appearance, with the now supposedly-redundant public bar/private bar split still intact, and plenty of original-ish features in place (mirrors, engraved glass, dark wood panelling and whatnot). Sells olives and mixed nuts, but despite this curious concession to modern life it remains primarily a fancy-free sort of place. Big tables arranged in discrete areas keep lively conversation flowing, and for those of an extra-mural bent, outside seating is available in order to drink in the heady atmosphere of Herne Hill. Does some real ales, which is a major bonus, and er, well, it's okay, which for Herne Hill is praise indeed. What else do you want - blood?
