This review gets off to an uncertain start as I walk into the pub and there is literally nobody there. I walk around the bar towards the back of the pub in search of some staff but there is nobody there either. I turn and head for the door and just then the barmaid appears, I get served and we’re in business.

It’s a fairly small pub, but what it lacks in size it more than makes up for in atmosphere: pop art themed décor shimmering in the candlelight, rhythmic dance music floating in waves and a floral stained glass window at the front. The barmaid and her bizarrely dressed assistant flit in and out of the bar to do a stock-take and the place slowly starts to fill as the working week draws to an end. First to enter are a gay couple, then another bloke walks in followed by an old man and the place starts to feel occupied. I have a fleeting concern that I have happened upon one of those pubs, but quickly dismiss the notion as nonsense. I found myself liking the place and would probably come back if I was in the area again. Board games are available for customer use.

At last! A decent looking pub! After walking for what seemed like miles, this pub revealed itself like an oasis in the desert of cafes and shops selling pointless tat that make up most of East Finchley. This fine-looking establishment beckoned to me through the railway arches carrying the Northern Line and I just had to go in. I was not disappointed. It’s a big pub, yet somehow manages to maintain some intimacy by being split into smaller chunks variously used for dining and lounging about. Young trendy types and beautiful people avail themselves of the mismatched furniture which is seemingly made up of pieces left behind by the Antiques Roadshow. There is an eclectic choice of beer on offer including a few cracking ales and some Belgian stuff. An array of gastro-inspired food is diligently prepared by a bloke in a silly hat at the end of the bar. Hosts regular quiz nights.
