Docklands pubs

East London’s own version of Gotham City.

At last! We've found a pub in the forest of concrete and glass that makes up London's newest city.....and it's open on a Sunday! Half expecting the pub sign to feature the cartoon characters Sylvester and Tweetie Pie, we ventured inside to discover a voluminous interior with plenty of space to stand and sit. The beer is surprisingly good - the entire glorious range of Fullers ales are served. I imagine this place gets filled to bursting point on weekday lunchtimes and evenings with suited types. However Sundays are more sedate. Entertainment is in the form of big screen sports and fruit machines. We pitted our increasingly beer-addled brains against the quiz machine to a background of raucous England rugby fans. This place is an oasis in a desert of wine bar hellishness.

Yet another pub that has been refurbished for the yuppies. Its all rather clinical and contrived, and at £3.20 a pint I don't think we'll be back in a hurry. The only redeeming features are the large terrace at the front and the balcony bar.

This pub has been here for years, but unlike many others it has successfully reinvented itself to suit its new affluent surroundings. Just as the bleak windswept landscape that featured in "The Sweeney" was replaced by luxury flats and gleaming skyscrapers; the pub's original working class clientele have been displaced by Chardonnay sipping middle-aged couples who like their food drizzled in olive oil. This place is probably not for pub purists and I'm normally quite critical of gastro pubs myself, but this one has sort of won me over. The décor is rustic in a vaguely Mediterranean way and looked great in the milky winter sunshine. This combined with the music created that perfect laid back Sunday vibe. They serve a fine pint of beer here as well which makes a change from other pubs that have "gone gastro". Both Adnams Broadside and Brakspears bitter were available. There is a terrace at the back overlooking the Thames and the Millennium Dome. It's quite an impressive view, but only the hardcore should venture out there in January chill.

5.50 for a pint and a glass of cranberry juice?! This is an outrage and should not be allowed to happen! On the other hand it's my own stupid fault for going into a pub in Canary Wharf, an area renowned for its high prices. Thatll teach me. Don't bother coming here unless you get paid a fat pin-striped salary and your name is Piers.

This pub has had a reversal in fortunes since being taken over by Nicholsons. Prices are now closer to the London average and there is an impressive choice of beers from Adnams to Fruli. Sunday afternoons when the sun sparkles on the dock are particularly enjoyable.
