Battersea pubs
A poor man’s Chelsea

After a tedious and thoroughly miserable afternoon spent in Battersea I just had to find a pub, any pub, to regain my sanity and this smart Youngs pub seemed like a good enough place to stop and recharge my batteries. It has clearly been refurbished to suit the wealthier denizens of Battersea as the pub has been stripped of most of its Victoriana to create an altogether more light and airy feel. The bar sits at the heart of the pub, physically not just metaphorically. There is a restaurant-like dining area to the rear and beyond lies a private room which is available for hire. Smooth music slithers from the speakers at a sensibly low volume and conversation abounds. After a while, half a dozen women with push chairs emerge from the rear room with clipped “goodbyes and thank yous”. Once they left the pub I half expected them to open their umbrellas and drift skywards like Mary Poppins. The pub hosts quiz nights every Wednesday.

It's a pub and theatre combo. As I walk in, I notice the place is rammed full of people from all walks of life watching the cricket on Sky. This is a good sign, the people that is and not the cricket being on Sky and there is a pleasant buzz about the place. This pub has something for everybody: sport on telly, decent beer, regular quiz nights, a beer garden and the theatre of course. Just like Ian Botham in his day, this one’s a good all-rounder.
