Barnes pubs

Completely inaccessible but rather lovely village hidden by a bend in the river. Manages with aplomb to convey the illusion that it has nothing to do with the rest of the city. Several traditional pubs, some leaning rather too heavily into gastro territory.

The Coach and Horses, 27 Barnes High St
It's easier to get from London to Newcastle than it is to get from any other part of London to Barnes, especially with a Rail Replacement Bus Service in operation and copious rain having reduced the Thames path to a vat of ankle-deep mud. Stretched out amongst the thick riverbank foliage like a cinematic stage set, Barnes does, however, repay the effort expended in getting there with some considerable olde worlde charm, not the least thanks to this pub. A venerable and highly traditional old coaching inn, it is set back from the spoiled mega-boozers that sit by the river , in what I suppose passes for the centre of Barnes. Outside loos, nice beer garden, lovely bar area that looks unchanged in generations, Youngs/Wells beers, and seats that scream to be sat in all day long form an irresistable pub architecture, added to by mottled glass that catches the afternoon light in that pleasant, woozy I've-got-better-things-to-do-but-this-is-just-too-nice sort of way. Good food, laid-back atmosphere and lovely barstaff make for a top notch drinking experience.

Ye White Hart, The Terrace
The White Hart, in the best tradition of Young's pubs, combines great beer, great location and great atmosphere. With a riverside balcony and garden it is a lovely place to go for a pint on a sunny day and watch the various activities on the river. On Sundays there is a very reasonably priced and generously proportioned buffet roast available. This pub is certainly worth a visit, especially on a summer's evening when you can sit on the balcony as the sun sets over the river.
