Balham pubs
Beloved hangout of rich dinkys, there is in fact little to recommend Balham apart from the fact that having both train and tube lines means it’s fairly easy to escape.

The impressive Edwardian façade of this large pub dominates a street corner a stone's throw from Balham station. The interior is a bit of a come down after the external splendour and has been refurbished to a fake 21st century approximation of its original décor complete with chandeliers and new 'ye olde pictures' from the 'pub tat' warehouse. To be fair I've seen far worse refits in my time and I warmed to my surroundings. I found a spot at the bar next to two Irishmen who were so drunk they could barely speak and were struggling for balance on their bar stools. They were so drunk I knew they wouldn't attempt to converse with me and I could enjoy my drink in peace. I chose my pint from the decent range of beers on offer and settled in to read my paper. Once upon a time this must have been a working man's boozer - not any more. The food menu now reflects the modern fascination with celebrity chefs and displays a range of appetising gastro fayre. Flyers on the tables advertise a packed programme of events hosted by the pub. They have everything from line dancing to pole dancing. All this is accompanied by regular live music and DJs. This place is more than just a pub, it's an entertainment venue. This diversification has earned the pub several awards over the years and keeps the punters pouring in.
