NOTE:This one's hidden down an unappealing alleyway off Hackney Road and isn't the easiest to find. It's a one time traditional East-End boozer that fell on hard times a few years ago and closed under threat of redevelopment as flats. Thanks to a local campaign to save it, it's back. The re-opened pub attracts a mostly younger crowd, wooed by its programme of regular events and friendly staff. The new owners have retained the traditional wood-panelled decor and seem sympathetic to the pub's rich history, which for me is like a breath of fresh air and gives the place a real atmosphere. London Fields and Brodie's beers are the star beers behind the bar. Definitely worth taking the time and trouble to seek out.
