Wimbledon pubs
Bipolar district. The main town - festering in a sea of traffic fumes - has the transport, the shops and the overfed yobs roving between chain pubs. The village, lording it over everything else from the top of the hill, contains giant mansions, expensive delis and pubs for those who consider themselves to be a rather superior breed.
The Alexandra, 33 Wimbledon Hill Rd, SW19 7NE
Located at the bottom of Wimbledon Hill, just before the town centre disappears up its own arse in Wimbledon Village, The Alex is one of the few real pubs left in the area. Having survived having its backside sliced off in order to open an awful wine bar (oh so humorously called 'The Smart Alex'), the remaining scruffy part continues to do what it does best, serve beer, and, well that's it actually. The only concession to the modern era is a big TV screen for football and a roof terrace for Summer drinks. Recommended.

I am the landlady of the Crooked Billet in Wimbledon and would like the opportunity to defend our business after the review written by Samantha, August 2006. I remember this Sunday and the group of customers in question. We were twice as busy as the previous Sunday which unfortunately we could not have predicted. We struggled to cope on that day with less staff than was desirable and insufficient supplies of food for the demand on that particular day. In fairness, the menu does not specify a particular vegetable to be served with the roast so I don't think an alternative vegetable was a fair criticism. However, a Yorkshire pudding is supposed to be served with the meal so a discount of £2 is I think reasonable. I would like to apologise for the fact that these customers went away unsatisfied and would like the opportunity to make amends. If they would like to make themselves known to the landlady, I would like to offer them a complimentary meal and show that we are normally on much better form! We did learn from that experience and the chef is instructed from now on to keep us informed of all menu changes before we take orders no matter how busy we are. The majority of our customers are very happy with the food and service and most of our regulars certainly wouldn't describe Michael as surly. Please do come in and let us prove this to you!

On sunday I took my parents, brother and his girlfriend for Sunday lunch here.
Bit pricey (£11.95 for lamb shank. £10.95 for roast beef) but I thought it would be worth it. We arrived at 2.30pm and we were told we would have to wait half an hour for a table which we did. When we were seated 45 minutes later we were told they had run out of lamb shank and pork leaving only the beef or they would cook some lamb chops. We ordered 4 beef and yorkshires and the lamb chops. When it arrived 30 minutes later (A total of 90 minutes after we arrived) there were 3 tiny roast potatoes and 3 slices of fatty, gristley, grey microwaved beef. No yorkshire and the vegetables were red and green peppers stirfried with courgette, in fish stock I believe?? The 2 lamp chops were tiny and so overcooked my brother couldn't cut them. I called the waiter Michael over and said I was not happy. He asked me what I wanted him to do about it, go in the kitchen and cook some more beef? I said had we known that we would have to wait so long, for everything to run out and then be served such a bad meal we would have gone somewhere else. He asked me what I wanted him to do about it. I asked him what he was going to do? He went off and came back and said they would knock £2 off each meal. I think due to the lack of yorkshire pud the price should have been reduced anyway from an expensive £10.95 per meal. When we finshed and ordered the bill they hadn't changed the prices and I had to send the bill back for them to amend.
Do not eat here, Wimbledon Village has loads of nice places to eat that are much cheaper than this without the surly waiter.

The climb up the hill from Wimbledon station reminds me just how the British class system is so deeply entrenched. Not only do your legs remind you that you are on a gradient and that its tiring going uphill, your eyes start to notice the houses and cars getting bigger and the schools becoming more posh and exclusive. All the wealthy people live at the top of the hill near all the trees and open space and the less wealthy at the bottom have to contend with traffic fumes and noise. The feudal folk who live on the hill also have the best pubs. The pub and its location, particularly in the summer, feel quintessentially English: the thwack of leather against willow on the edge of the common, great beer (Youngs) and Pimms on tap. As long as you can ignore the omnipresent rugger types and marauding Wombles, it's a place where you can enjoy lazy afternoons in the sunshine, forgetting your worries and getting pleasantly merry. It also does food and is open until midnight on Friday and Saturday nights.

This pub has been closed for some time and re-opened last night. What a blast. Really good beer and friendly staff. Much better atmosphere than I remember. We had a really good time and will go back.
