Wandsworth pubs
The Alma, 499 Old York Road, SW18 1TF
A great boozer serving the full compliment of Young's beers. The interior has been tastefully restored and is true to the pub's Victorian roots. The centrepiece is the centrally-located bar area where you can order your drinks from a menu listing every single variety of intoxicating liquor available. Wandsworth Town station is within spitting distance which is very convenient, although this does mean that it can get seriously rammed once the first commuter-packed trains get in from Waterloo. This happened on our visit and place quickly filled with clones of David Cameron. I can see the film title now: "The Alma - Attack of the Clones". If you don't want to hear conversations about shares or property prices there is a dining room serving gastro fayre at the back or if you're really desperate for some peace you can go and hire the room upstairs. Once the invasion subsides things return to normal and you can appreciate being in one of the better pubs in this part of London. Recommended outside of the hours of 6pm-8pm on week nights.
