Victoria pubs
The Cardinal, 23 Francis St, Victoria, SW1P 1DN
Lurking seductively at the rear end of the Catholic Cathedral, a large number of both suits and tourists alike take the opportunity to enter the Cardinal's chambers. Set amongst a row of tall, elegant red-brick apartments, its unspoilt and attractive Victorian exterior gives way to a splendid dark wood interior; generously spaced, high-ceilinged, moodily lit and well-bedecked with tables. Like most Samuel Smith's pubs there is no music or TV, and the mellow, relaxed atmosphere didn't call for any distractions. It is open at weekends, and serves food throughout the week. Definitely worth slipping into for more than a quick one.

Horse and Groom, 7 Groom Place, SW1X 7BA
A cosy pub in a quiet street of mews houses that could have dropped through time from the 19th century were it not for the laminate flooring. That said it is worth taking the detour from busy Hyde Park Corner to find the place and enjoy the Shepherd Neame beers and friendly local atmosphere. Although the pub does its own food, they have an arrangement where you can order in pizza in the evenings. There is a room available to hire upstairs for functions. Not open at the weekend except by arrangement.

Plumbers Arms, 14 Lower Belgrave St, SW1W 0LN
Fantasy-flashback ultra-traditional stripped wood and working-class urgh in this Belgravia watering hole, where moneyed suited sorts congregate to pretend that they’re Southend boy racers. Oi Oi!
