Surbiton pubs
Surbiton is most famous as the setting for 'The Good Life', even though it was filmed elsewhere. Probably the most interesting feature of the place is its fast train line into central London and once you've sampled the pubs here, you might want to hop on one pretty damn quick.

Sharing its name with one of the direst pubs known to man (in Tooting) does not bode well for this place. Assuming that somehow against all logic it had been so successful that it had opened another pub in Surbiton, I was confused as to why it had been recommended to us. As we approached, I noticed the words 'Bar and Kitchen' appended to the name. These words are a subtle message to the world, saying 'you are young and sophisticated, come here and drink copious amounts of wine whilst eating overpriced bar food'. So being young and sophisticated, we went in and were immediately approached by a member of staff demanding we fold up our pushchair. Ah, I'd forgotten that 'young and sophisticated' also means not having any children. Whilst at the bar, noting the beer came from the small independent brewer Hogshead, another family came in with one of the dreaded child-carrying contraptions. Even though their child was asleep, they were told to fold it up. Quite sensibly, rather than inflict a just woken screaming child on the rest of us, they decided to leave and presumably will never be back.
So things weren't going well but the food had been the reason for our trip here and it was, well, pretty average, a standard sunday roast with slightly interesting mash.
So after such a warm welcome, we won't be back. What the owners of this bar seemed to have failed to realise is that their location means that plenty of their potential clientele are families and although kids won't drink several bottles of wine, they demand routine so if they like a place they want to go back again and again, forever. And that wouldn't be too bad for business.
