St Giles pubs

Once a notorious rookerie, the Victorians solved its crime problem by demolishing all the housing and putting a whacking great road through the middle of it. Now festering in anonymity, it does at least boast several decent Korean restaurants and some guitar shops. The church has a long and distinguished line of literary patrons.

One of these places possessed of the indescribable magic of the truly great pub. Maybe it's the tatty furnishings, the wide mix of clientele, the vertiginous stairway to the toilets... A pub that feels like a local, even though its locality was blasted off the face of the earth back in the Victorian era.

Boarded up, and apparently due to be turned into Luxury Apartments, because London hasn't got enough of those. Rumour has it that it will re-open in a different location.

A temple to all things rock. A demonic bat creature snarls menacingly above the main entrance. The inside is reminiscent of the Chamber of Horrors at Madame Tussauds, except it serves beer. The props are impressive: a huge wooden crucifix adorned with torture instruments, a mechanoid spider and a graveyard replete with skulls and spider's webs. In contrast the walls are plastered with heavy metal posters and flyers. The beer is crap, but nobody cares as it will only get thrown up later after a bout of head banging to 'Napalm Death'. As our stay at the pub continued, the pub filled with an assortment of punks, goths and weirdos. Unfortunately for them the music then disappeared off into the world of reggae. What the hell is this?!. We left hoping that the music doesn't always do this. Keep it rocking people.
