South Kensington pubs

Worth visiting if only for the ludicrous Albert Memorial, a work so silly the only appropriate response is to stand there and laugh at it. For hours. There's also a range of fantastic museums, the Albert Hall and lots of engineering students. To think that in Pepys' time it was a swamp so dangerous that the esteemed diary writer refused to travel there. We have Prince Albert to thank for its transformation.

The Bunch of Grapes, 207 Brompton Road, SW3 1LA
A beautifully decorated traditional Victorian-style pub situated between Harrods and the V&A. It’s a relaxing and convivial if slightly dull establishment. On our visit there were four real ales at the bar and for those with an appetite, there is an upstairs dining room serving above average pub food at above average prices.

Just up from the Michelin Building and just along from South Kensington station, this manages to be off the beaten track enough to not be haunted by tourists. A narrow building seeming to perch perilously by the edge of the road, it offers a traditional, rather spare interior with several tables at either end and a row of bar stools. The beer on offer is the traditional big brewery stuff, but friendly staff and a relaxed vibe make it worth staying for a couple of drinks. Not one for a big party, but an excellent quiet meeting place. No TV adds to the appeal.
