It's lying. It's actually very difficult to get further away from the country than Pimlico. Blatant falsehood aside, this provided us with good beer and delicious vittles, and was altogether extraordinarily pleasant. A summer pub.

From a distance, this extraordinary establishment is easily confused with a butcher's shop, possessing the same red-and-white-stiped awnings flapping limply in the breeze. Coming closer, I can make out the words 'Marquis of Westminster - Cafe Bar' written in a fancy font, suggesting luxury, elegance, sophistication. Cursing inwardly at the thought of another gentrified boozer full of posh nobs, I enter anyway, and immediately find myself in a parallel universe. The whole interior seems to have been hit by a bomb that only contained Artex and carpet, the result being a ravaged mess of beige shiny Artex lathered over wood, walls, ceilings, fireplaces and plasterboard, and a skein of bright red carpet that rises off the floor and rather alarmingly rolls up the front of the bar. As Cafe Bars go, this one looks less like the repose of sophisticated fashionistas and more like the inside of a badly built barn decorated by a bunch of three year olds. The ceiling is singularly difficult to describe, consisting of an inept spider's web of (Artexed) crossbeams supported by columns of (Artexed) cheap lumber that would have embarrassed Robinson Crusoe's desert island hut. A tiny disco ball hangs over the entrance, whilst disco lights behind the bar add a suitably psychedelic hue to proceedings. The windows are adorned with mind-bendingly bright red and yellow taffeta, and are framed by mouldering curtains, while broken light fittings hang off the walls in various states of dejection. I stare boggle-eyed at my surroundings, while everyone else seems to act as if it's perfectly normal to spend Saturday lunchtime in an Artexed shed in the middle of Pimlico, watching sickly disco lights and talking ceaselessly about diets. Food arrives, and it's a warm baguette with Kraft slices and pickle that looks like dog shit. And that tastes superb. The Beatles burst over the speakers, there's horse racing on the telly, and I find myself floating off in this improbable other universe. This place is utterly and magnificently unique - a mandatory place of pilgrimage for anyone with an interest in pubs - redefining the words 'Cafe Bar' in a never-to-be-repeated way.

A traditional pub occupying a quiet street corner in Pimlico. This small Edwardian time capsule serves a decent range of beers which may be enjoyed either inside or outside on the pavement. It ticks all the right boxes, but lacks a certain something which we cannot define in this review. Popular with locals and builders.
